The 31-year-old was born in Buffalo, New York, in the United States, on August 10, 1991. He is both an American and a Canadian citizen. The parents of the ice hockey player are from Canada.
Foligno’s parents are Mike and Janis Foligno
Marcus’s parents, Mike and Janis Foligno, are two of the best people he knows. Mike, the athlete’s father, used to play ice hockey and was a winger in the National Hockey League for fifteen seasons, from 1979–80 to 1993–94.
In the 1979 NHL Entry Draft, papa Foligno was picked by the Detroit Red Wings. During his career, the former winger played for the Buffalo Sabres, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Florida Panthers. After he retired, he became a coach. He is also the scout for the Vegas Golden Knights and has been since 2016.

Marcus and his dad, both NHL players, aren’t the only athletes in the Foligno family. Marcus’s brother, Nick, also plays ice hockey professionally.
Nick was picked by the Ottawa Senators in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft in 2006. He now plays for the Boston Bruins. Foligno’s older brother also played for the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Toronto Maple Leafs. He also played for the United States in the 2009 and 2010 IIHF World Championships.
There are also two sisters
The Minnesota Wild winger grew up with Nick Foligno, his brother, and Lisa Foligno-Carey and Cara Foligno, her sisters.
Cara used to be on the Dufferin-Peel Catholic school board and now works in marketing for the Buffalo Sabres. Lisa works in Peterborough, Ontario. She went to Canisius College and played lacrosse there.
Foligno has two children

Foligno played in the Ontario Hockey League when he was a junior

In 2011, Marcus turned pro

The ice hockey player was asked to join Canada’s 2011 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships national junior team selection camp. Foligno also played for Canada at the 2011 World Junior Championship, where the team won the silver medal.

Junior

Foligno played for the Wolves for two more seasons. His best season was 2010–2011, when he scored 23 goals and had 59 points in 47 games.
Buffalo Sabres
On May 25, 2011, Foligno made a deal with the Buffalo Sabres to become a professional player. In the 2011–12 season, he started playing for the Rochester Americans, the Sabres’ team in the American Hockey League (AHL). Foligno was called up to the Sabres on December 19, 2011. On December 20, he played his first game in the NHL against the Ottawa Senators, which was the team his brother Nick Foligno was on at the time. Marcus Foligno made his second NHL start on March 10, 2012, again against his brother and the Ottawa Senators. Foligno scored his first goal of his career at 14:06 in the third period. This tied the game, and Buffalo won it in a shootout.
Marcus Foligno, like his brother Nick, used their father’s “Foligno Leap” to celebrate his first goal in the NHL. But Marcus wasn’t sure if he really scored his first goal. So, on March 14, 2012, Marcus scored his next goal in Buffalo using the “Leap.”
Foligno broke with family tradition by not picking the numbers 17 or 71, which were worn by his father (worn by his brother). When he was drafted by the Sabres, he chose to wear number 82 instead of his father’s number 17, which was given to him at camp. Foligno was moved to the Americans right before the NHL lockout in 2012–13. But that changed when he was traded to the Minnesota Wild, where he chose to wear number 17.
On June 27, 2016, the Sabres made Foligno an offer that he had to accept. On July 14, 2016, he was given a one-year deal. Foligno tied his 23 points from the previous season by scoring a career-high 13 goals while playing on the checking line in 2016–17.
Minnesota Wild
Foligno was traded to the Minnesota Wild on June 30, 2017, along with Tyler Ennis and a third-round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, for Marco Scandella, Jason Pominville, and a fourth-round pick in 2018. Foligno was a restricted free agent. The Wild signed Foligno to a four-year, $11.5 million contract extension on September 14. Each year, Foligno will get $2.875 million. Foligno was taken to the hospital on October 12, 2017, after Chicago Blackhawks forward John Hayden hit him in the face during a fight during Minnesota’s 5–2 win. Michael Russo of The Athletic says that the hit may have caused him to have a “broken facial bone.”
Foligno was asked to take part in Canada’s 2011 national junior team selection camp for the 2011 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. He was about to start his final junior season with the Sudbury Wolves in the OHL. After making a good impression, he was added to Canada’s team for the tournament, which was held in Buffalo, New York, where he was born. In seven games, he scored two goals and got four points, which helped Canada win the silver medal.
