An alligator killed an 88-year-old woman in South Carolina near Hilton Head Island. This is at least the fourth time this year that an alligator has killed someone in the US.
Officials said that an alligator killed her and dumped her body in a pond at Sun City Hilton Head, a community near Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Sun City Hilton Head says on its website that it is on 5,725 acres and has 1,500 parks and wetlands. More than 200 lakes and ponds can be found in the area.

The police found out that Nancy A. Becker lived in Sun City Hilton Head and was working near the pond when she fell in and was killed by two alligators.
Officials said that the male alligator, which was 9 feet and 8 inches long, was later caught, moved from the pond, and put to sleep. On all sides of the pond where the body was found, there are homes.
At 11:15 a.m. on Monday, a Sun City Hilton Head resident called 911. When the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office arrived, they saw a big alligator holding a dead body.
This is the second time this year that an alligator has killed someone in South Carolina, and the fourth time that an alligator has killed someone in the US. A man was killed near a retention pond outside of Myrtle Beach on June 24.
Attacks by alligators, especially ones that kill, are said to be rare. The New York Times says that there have been five alligator attacks that killed people in South Carolina since the year 2000.
