When she was in high school, she wrote articles for the Comox District Free Press and sent them by bus to Victoria, where they were published in the Times Colonist. While she was going to school at the University of Victoria, she was the sports editor for The Oak Bay Star.
At the University of Victoria, the journalist got a Bachelor of Arts in English and Creative Writing. She got a Master of Arts in Journalism from the University of Western Ontario in London.

The resulting series on the Khalsa School revealed financial wrongdoing, close ties to terrorist groups, sexual abuse of young girls, and the fact that a convicted hijacker who was in Canada illegally was living in the school. She got her first death threats through the mail and because of these stories.
