In 2016, at the Puerto Rico Open, he beat Steve Marino in a playoff to win his first PGA Tour tournament.
At the 2021 Northern Trust at Liberty National, he would have to wait five years and make 142 starts to win his second PGA Tour title. Finau didn’t think he could make a living by playing golf because it wasn’t a big part of Polynesian culture. He once told ESPN, “Golf in Polynesia was so out of the ordinary. Nobody plays golf. Everyone thought that sport was only played by girls or old, rich white men.”
In 2018, he tied for 10th at the Masters, 5th at the US Open, 9th at The Open Championship, and 42nd at the PGA Championship. This was his best Major year.

Professional Career
Finau’s unique approach to the course and natural strength made it easy for him to get exemptions from tournaments, but his path to the top was far from smooth.
He made the cut at the US Bank Championship in Milwaukee, which was his first PGA Tour event. He tied for 70th place, but people followed him around the course because his drives were so loud.
In 2009, Finau came in second place on the Golf Channel reality show The Big Break. On the show, aspiring golfers competed for a prize that included exemptions into individual events and full-season exemptions on feeder tours.
Ravena, Finau’s mother, died in a car accident in 2011. Her death was very hard on him. He ended up in the hospital with a stomach ulcer after what happened, but he later said he knew his mother wouldn’t want him to give up on his dream. Finau plays every Sunday and wears green to honor his mother.

In early 2021, Finau had a stretch of five weeks where he finished in the top 4 in all four tournaments that he entered. He finished fourth at The American Express, second at the Farmers Insurance Open, and second at the Saudi International on the European Tour.
He also lost the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California, in a playoff to Max Homa. Finau won the 2021 Northern Trust, beating Cameron Smith in a playoff.
In September 2021, Finau played on the U.S. team in the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin. The U.S. team won 19–9, and Finau went 1–2–0, including a loss in his Sunday singles, match against Ian Poulter.
2021–22 PGA Tour season
In July 2022, Finau won the 3M Open for his third career PGA Tour win. Finau trailed tournament leader Scott Piercy by five shots and second-place Emiliano Grillo by one when the final round began.
Still, everything turned on the back nine when Piercy shot a final-round 76 with a back-nine 41 while Finau shot a final-round 67 with a 33 on the back nine, including a bogey six at last.
