Early years
At the 2019 California Hall of Fame ceremony, RuPaul talked about growing up in California and how it changed the way he works.
RuPaul was born on November 17, 1960, in San Diego, California. He is the son of Ernestine “Toni” Fontenette (who married Irving Andrew Charles) and Irving Andrew Charles. Both of his parents grew up in Louisiana. His mother gave him the name “Ru,” which comes from the word “roux,” which is the base for gumbo and other creole stews and soups. Career
The dance/house album Supermodel of the World was made by RuPaul in 1993. It was put out by the rap label Tommy Boy, and its dance track “Supermodel (You Better Work)” became a big hit. In 1997, he put out his third album, Ho Ho Ho, which was a Christmas album. He has been in many movies as a guest star. In both Brady Bunch movies, he played Jan’s female guidance counselor. In 1997, RuPaul and Martha Wash worked together to make a new version of the classic disco song “It’s Raining Men.” The song was included on the 1998 compilation CD RuPaul’s Go Go Box Classics, which was a collection of some of his favorite dance songs by other artists. This was his third and last release through Rhino Records and a major record label. During this time, he was in TV commercials for Webex and magazine ads for the company.
