Richard Schiff: Early Life

Schiff was the second of three sons to be born to Charlotte Schiff, an executive in television and publishing, and Edward Schiff, an attorney specializing in real estate. Schiff was born on May 27, 1955, in Bethesda, Maryland, and was reared there.

Schiff did not complete his high school education but went on to earn his high school equivalency diploma. He enrolled in The City College of New York (CCNY) in 1973 for a limited amount of time but did not go on to complete his degree. He relocated to Colorado, where he was able to find work chopping wood for fireplaces. After moving back to New York in 1975, he enrolled at CCNY to pursue an acting education and was eventually accepted into the school’s theatrical program.

In the beginning, Schiff was involved in directing studies. He directed a number of plays off-Broadway, one of which being Antigone in 1983, starring a recent college graduate named Angela Bassett. Around the middle of the 1980s, Schiff made the decision to pursue a career in acting and quickly found work in many television roles. Following Steven Spielberg’s discovery of him in an episode of the television drama High Incident, he was cast in the film The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997).

His career started off on the right foot, which led to him landing the part of White House Communications Director Toby Ziegler on the Emmy-winning television series The West Wing, which was created by Aaron Sorkin. Schiff gained notoriety for his secluded and rigorous devotion to his art, in addition to his low-key manner of delivering his performances. In the film What’s the Worst That Could Happen?, which was released in 2001, he played a role alongside Martin Lawrence and Danny DeVito. He appeared alongside Sean Penn and Michelle Pfeiffer in the film I Am Sam, playing the role of the stern Mr. Turner, and he also appeared alongside Al Pacino in the film People I Know.

In the film Ray, Schiff played the role of Jerry Wexler and, in preparation for the part, he shaved his beard. Schiff made the decision to quit The West Wing after working on the series for a total of six seasons. In order to meet his contractual commitments, he appeared in fifty percent of the episodes of the season that followed. Schiff continued making appearances after NBC made the decision to cancel the series, right up until the conclusion of the show’s run in May 2006, despite the fact that he had a very small role in the series finale.

In the same year, he appeared in the film Civic Duty starring Peter Krause. In the episode that capped off the second season of the HBO series Entourage, Schiff made a guest appearance as himself. The figure worked with Skynet and betrayed the resistance, both of which he was a part of. As a token of appreciation for his service to Skynet, he was brought forward in time to the present day. In an episode of In Plain Sight, he appeared alongside Mary McCormack, his former co-star on The West Wing, in the role of an Orthodox rabbi.

He shared the screen with Eddie Murphy in the 2009 film Imagine That, and he appeared alongside Michael Douglas and Susan Sarandon in the 2009 film Solitary Man. Later on in the year, he traveled back to London to film two additional movies there. Additionally, he has appeared as a guest star in episodes of Any Human Heart and White Collar’s second season episode 15, both of which starred Jim Broadbent in the character of a psychiatrist.

In the film Johnny English Reborn, he also portrayed the part of a former CIA agent who worked for a terrorist organization. In the play Smash!, which opened in April 2011, Schiff made her return to the London West End. In the drama Knife Fight, he starred opposite Rob Lowe, and in the film Fire with Fire, he starred alongside Josh Duhamel, Rosario Dawson, and Bruce Willis.
