It is a direct and stand-alone sequel to Puss in Boots (2011), which was a spin-off of the Shrek franchise and the sixth movie of that genre. The Last Wish is an American computer-animated adventure film that will be released in 2022.
It was produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures, and it was directed by Joel Crawford and co-directed by Januel Mercado.
The film was adapted from a screenplay written by Paul Fisher and Tommy Swerdlow, which was based on a story written by Swerdlow and the writer of the first film, Tom Wheeler, with additional screenplay material provided by Etan Cohen.

Puss in Boots (The Last Wish): Plot
After the events of the first film and some time after Shrek Forever After, Puss in Boots becomes a legend after vanquishing a gigantic monster, but he is unfortunately put to death by a bell due to an unfortunate mishap.
After using all his previous seven lives, he suddenly realises that he only has one more chance at life remaining when he opens his eyes.
In the beginning, Puss blows it off, but after he gets into a fight with a wolf he thinks is a bounty hunter and ends up losing, he makes the decision to hang up his cape and become a tamed pet cat for Mama Luna.
After some time has passed, he comes face to face with a dog that is pretending to be a cat; however, their chat is cut short when Goldilocks and the Three Bears Crime Family arrive to find him.
However, after they locate what they believe to be his “grave,” they mistakenly show Puss a Wishing Star. Puss then makes the decision to locate the star in order to regain his lives.
He discovers that “Big” Jack Horner is the one in possession of the map, and that Jack wants to utilise the Wishing Star so that he can have all of the magic in the world for himself.
While he is in the process of stealing the map, he is taken by surprise by Kitty Softpaws. Kitty wants the map for herself and is still angry at Puss because of what occurred in Santa Colomba. Puss is trying to get even with Kitty.
They are able to get away from Goldi and Jack, and they take the dog that Puss has named Perrito with them as they travel to the Dark Forest, which is where the Wishing Star is located.
They discover that the route is unique for each individual who possesses the map and use it. Since Perrito’s route is more straightforward than that of Puss and Kitty, they have decided to entrust the map to Perrito.
Perrito follows the stick after it is thrown away by Jack, which ultimately results in his being apprehended by Jack.
Puss and Kitty are successful in rescuing him; nevertheless, Puss begins to experience hallucinations of the wolf and runs away, which ultimately results in the loss of the map to Goldi.

Puss in Boots (The Last Wish): Production
In November of 2012, the executive producer Guillermo del Toro revealed that the filmmaker Chris Miller had the idea to take the titular character on a trip to a “quite exotic setting.” In addition to that, he stated that a handful of different revisions of the screenplay had been finished.
Antonio Banderas, who provided his voice for the character, stated in April 2014 that production on the sequel had begun.
Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Thieves was the title given to the film when it was released on June 12, 2014.
Banderas stated in March 2015 that the script was undergoing revisions at the time. He also dropped a few hints about Shrek making an appearance in the movie at some point.
By November 2018, Chris Meledandri, creator and CEO of Illumination, has been brought on board as an executive producer for both the fifth instalment of the Shrek franchise and the sequel to Puss in Boots.
It was reported in February 2019 that Bob Persichetti was going to direct the movie, and that Latifa Ouaou, the producer of the first film, was going to oversee the development of the sequel along with Meledandri.
Both Persichetti and Ouaou had previously worked on the first film as the head of story and the producer, respectively.
On August 19, 2020, DreamWorks filed a trademark application for the revised title of the sequel, which was accepted in December.
The title is “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” Persichetti was succeeded as director of the film in March 2021 by Joel Crawford, who had previously helmed DreamWorks’ The Croods: A New Age (2020).
Additionally, the film’s producer Mark Swift, editor James Ryan, and screenwriter Paul Fisher all returned to work on the project, and Januel Mercado took on the role of co-director of the film.

Puss in Boots (The Last Wish): Graphic Design
Nate Wragg, production designer for DreamWorks, came up with the idea to make the movie look more like illustrations from a storybook.
This idea was inspired by Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), which was the source of inspiration for the design of The Bad Guys (2022), which was the previous film produced by DreamWorks.
Before Crawford took over in March 2021, Bob Persichetti, the director of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was slated to lead Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in February 2019. However, Crawford ended up getting the job.
The team at DreamWorks used modern technology to focus more on a painterly style design, with the goal of making the film look like it took place in a fairy-tale world.
This is in contrast to what the film looked like in Shrek (2001), which was produced by their now-defunct studio Pacific Data Images.
