The stunning new information on Sherri Papini’s case began to emerge in November of 2016, and it completely rocked the community of Redding, California. Keith Papini, who was her husband at the time, downloaded the Find my iPhone app and used it to narrow down the location of her phone and headphones to a crossroads in Redding, California. Sherri had gone out for an afternoon jog close to their home in the Mountain Gate area at approximately 2:00 p.m., but she was not seen again after that. A few hours later, the missing person report was filed for the 34-year-old woman, which resulted in an exhaustive search for her location. Sherri could not be located despite extensive searches both on the ground and in the air.
On the other hand, she was discovered on a rural road in Yolo County on November 24, 2016, around 146 miles away from her home. She stated that the kidnappers even forced her to wear an adult diaper while she was in their custody. However, Sherri said that she was released from captivity after three weeks of being held captive.
However, the authorities discovered various inconsistencies in her claims, one of which was her account for why she got branded. Initially, Sherri said that it occurred because she attempted to escape, but she then stated that it was at the request of the person who was meant to buy her. So the cops made the decision to investigate further. It became apparent after speaking with others who were familiar with Sherri that she had a predisposition for lying, and that when she was younger, she frequently ran away from home. A few of Sherri’s other friends have stated that she has been making up stories about being abused. In addition to this, the records of her phone calls revealed that she had been having conversations with a number of other guys in the days leading up to her disappearance.
The authorities also collected items of clothes belonging to Sherri, and further testing indicated the presence of male DNA on those items. In the year 2020, they were able to link the biological evidence to James Reyes, who had previously dated Sherri. When we reached this point in the investigation, a shocking development took place. When James was questioned by the police, he stated that Sherri had phoned him and alleged that Keith was abusing her. This was James’ response to the police’s questioning. James informed her that he was willing to assist her in escaping from her husband. He claimed that Sherri made the request for him to pick her up on November 2, 2016, and then drive her to his residence in Costa Mesa, California.
James continued by saying that Sherri had inflicted her own wounds and that she had also requested his assistance in branding herself. On the other hand, when it got close to Thanksgiving that year, Sherri realised how much she missed her children and longed to be with them. Therefore, James left her at the side of the country road, which turned out to be the location where she was discovered. Later on, it was also found that a MySpace account affiliated with Sherri had a racist diatribe that targeted the Latino population from many years ago. Sherri, who was perhaps 40 years old at the time, was given a sentence to serve 18 months in federal prison in September of 2022. In addition to receiving a sentence of imprisonment, Sherri was had to make restitution in the amount of approximately $310,000. Prior to this, the authorities had indicated that the hoax kidnapping, the investigation, and her cashing cheques from the California Victim’s Compensation Board and Social Security Disability income cost the taxpayers approximately the same amount of money. In spite of the fact that Sherri is still being held by the California police, she has not been transferred to a federal penitentiary facility as of yet.

On November 2, 2016, when Keith Papini returned from work at Best Buy and couldn’t locate Sherri at home, he initially started to worry. He ultimately found her phone and earbuds at the Sunrise Drive and Old Oregon Trail intersection, approximately a mile from their house, using the “Find My iPhone” app.

Sherri was physically beaten while in custody, had her nose broken and her hair cut off, and weighed 87 pounds (40 kg) when she was released, according to a statement by her husband Keith Papini.
The sheriff at the time stated that the investigation was still ongoing and that police were “searching for a dark-colored SUV with two Hispanic females armed with handguns.” According to the sheriff, important information was being withheld at the time. Nearly 20 search warrants had been issued by detectives, and they claimed to be looking through social media accounts, bank accounts, email, and telephone records. The reason for the search warrant filings and the out-of-state travel of the detectives was not disclosed by the investigators.
Keith Papini “has been cooperative and even volunteered for a polygraph, which he passed,” claims Bosenko of Papini. Bosenko stated that “We are maintaining an open mind and investigating at all options,” but he has not ruled him out as a suspect in the kidnapping. According to reports, Keith may have jeopardised the inquiry by speaking to the media after Sherri was discovered.
Authorities said they are actively examining the case but would to comment on any specifics of the ongoing probe. While Papini was still missing in November, investigators in Michigan carried out more than 12 search warrants. In this situation, the FBI has offered assistance.
Both male and female DNA was discovered on Papini, neither of which matched either her or her spouse. The Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) search conducted by the FBI produced no matches. It was revealed in March 2022 that DNA from an ex-boyfriend, James Reyes, who claimed that Papini stayed with him during the time she was purportedly kidnapped, matched that found on her clothing.
