The events depicted in Purple Hearts did not take place in real life. Nevertheless, it is adapted from Tess Wakefield’s book published in 2017 under the same title.
Tess had previously written books for younger readers, thus the publication of Purple Hearts represented a shift in direction for her writing career. She started doing research that ended up being incorporated into the book because she was writing an adult-oriented fiction.

“The message was the aspect of the story that interested me the most. When I first read the title, I asked Liz if Purple Hearts meant that it was the combination of a red heart and a blue heart. She laughed and said, “I hadn’t thought of it that way, but that’s exactly what our story is.” When I first read the title, I asked Liz if Purple Hearts meant that it was the blending of a red heart and a blue heart. We are currently residents of a nation that is extremely polarised along the lines of “red vs blue.”
She went on to say, “This narrative is about choosing not to notice colour and choosing love, above all other things, and about how a red heart and a blue heart can come together and choose love.” That has the potential to bring about the most wonderful transformation in the world.
