The software tycoon announced in a series of tweets that he was purchasing Manchester United of England. Also, I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome, Elon Musk tweeted. While some fervently urged Musk to proceed, this left followers of the illustrious club gasping in shock.
The team is in terrible shape following a disastrous 2022–23 season. After losing 4-0 to Brentford last Saturday, they reached their lowest point. As of Tuesday, the football team’s market valuation was $2.08 billion. Musk has been sued for trying to get out of a $44 billion deal to buy Twitter. According to Forbes, he is worth $270 billion. Musk later clarified that he was joking when he announced he was going to buy the team, though, after a few hours. The owner of a Tesla wrote, “No, this is a continuing Twitter joke. I don’t purchase any sports franchises. However, Manchester United would be the team if it were any.” They were my favorite team when I was a child, he continued. It can be challenging to determine whether he is kidding given his history of publishing provocative tweets.
Since the era of the late manager Alex Ferguson, United hasn’t won the English league championship. The group has lost ground to nearby rival Manchester City, who has won four of the previous five titles. Cristiano Ronaldo, United’s star striker, will be allowed to depart this summer if he can find a team prepared to buy him. The team has lost its first two games, falling to the basement of the English Premier League, and has struggled to properly reassemble a team that did not perform well last season over the past two months. Fans have objected to the American Glazer family’s ownership of the franchise, which they purchased for $955.51 million in 2005.
In April, Musk made a proposal of around $41 billion (£31 billion) to acquire Twitter, but United fans wanted him to spend lavishly on their struggling squad. The anti-Glazer campaign gathered traction in 2017 after United took part in a contentious but failed bid to establish a separate European Super League. Over the past year, its shares, which are listed in New York, have fallen 24%. The Glazers reportedly stated that they were willing to sell but only if they were paid more than $4.85B. Since purchasing the club, the Glazers have come under heavy criticism from fans for their management. If Musk wants to pursue a transaction remains a mystery. Within six hours, his message had received more than 500,000 likes on the service.

Andy Goldstein, a United supporter and broadcaster, pushed Musk earlier this year to change his mind and purchase the Old Trafford team instead of Twitter. He stated: “Elon, please. Call off your offer. Purchase Man Utd. Spend £2 billion on the top athletes on the planet. win every contest. then tweet about it with pride.” Even mock United shirts with Tesla’s logo on the front were made by one fan. According to the Manchester United Fans Club of Kolkata, “Elon and his tweets are merely showy devices. The entire fan base is sick and tired of the Glazers, even though it would have been fantastic if he had actually invested 1/10th of what he paid for Twitter to own this legendary club.”
