His father moved from Chicago to New York to go to a Jesuit seminary. While he was there, he started organizing in the Bronx. Roger Hayes led community organizing at the Community Service Society of New York for a few years and now works as an assistant commissioner for the NYC Department of Health. Hayes’s mother used to teach school and now works for the New York City Department of Education. Hayes was raised as a Catholic, but he stopped going to church when he went to college[9] and stopped believing in God.

He has known comedian Desus Nice since they were kids and went to school together. Hayes went to the prestigious Hunter College High School in New York City, where Immortal Technique and Lin-Manuel Miranda were also students. Hayes was in charge of that musical, which was Miranda’s first.

Hayes went to Brown University and studied philosophy there. In 2001, he got his Bachelor of Arts degree. In terms of “intellectual formation” with Ezra Klein at Brown, Hayes said, “I was a philosophy major, but I was very much in this kind of analytic school. But postmodern critique, especially Foucault, had a big impact on the intellectual culture of the place I was in and the people I was with.” At Brown, Hayes met Kate Shaw, who would become his wife.

Job in journalism

Hayes worked for the independent weekly newspaper Chicago Reader for four years, starting in August 2001. For those four years, he wrote about politics in Chicago and around the country. Late in 2003, he started working as a senior editor for In These Times, a Chicago-based monthly magazine about work, where he would stay for four years.

Hayes was a Schumann Center Writing Fellow at In These Times from 2005 to 2006.

Hayes worked at The Nation Institute as a Puffin Foundation Writing Fellow in 2006 and 2007 and also wrote for The Nation. On November 1, 2007, he replaced David Corn as the Washington, D.C., editor for The Nation.

Hayes wrote a lot about things that were important to liberals, like what was wrong with the Democratic Party after 9/11 and how the labor movement was changing. During the health care fight of 2009–2010, when many political insiders thought the “public option” was dead, he also wrote about how progressive activists worked to bring it back to life.

Hayes taught English part-time at St. Augustine College in Chicago from 2008 to 2010 and was a Bernard L. Schwartz fellow at New America Foundation.

News on cable

Hayes took over The Rachel Maddow Show as a guest host while Maddow was in Afghanistan in July 2010. After that, he often filled in for Maddow when she was away. Hayes has also been the host of other MSNBC shows, like The Ed Show, Countdown with Keith Olbermann, and The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.

On November 5, 2010, MSNBC said that Hayes would fill in for Keith Olbermann while Olbermann was suspended. But the network changed its mind after finding out that Hayes had also given money to political campaigns, which was the reason Olbermann was suspended.

Hayes says that Maddow is the reason he became a host on MSNBC. “I would not be doing this at all if it weren’t for her,” he says.

Chris Hayes also appears on Late Night with Seth Meyers more than anyone else.

On August 1, 2011, MSNBC said that Hayes would host a two-hour Saturday and Sunday morning show that would go into detail about current events. On the first episode of Up with Chris Hayes, which aired on September 17, 2011, Nancy Pelosi was live on the show.

On May 27, 2012, during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, Hayes talked about the use of the word “”I feel uncomfortable with the word “heroism” when it is used to describe American soldiers killed in action,” he said. “It seems to me that it is so close to arguments for more war.” And I don’t want to dishonor or disrespect the memory of anyone who has died, and I know there are individual cases of real, great heroism, like saving fellow soldiers from a hail of gunfire. But I think we use this word in a way that makes it hard to understand. I could be wrong, though.” His statement caused a lot of trouble. Hayes first tried to defend his comment by telling people to listen to what he had actually said. Still, he wrote an apology on his blog. He also talked about his comments and the difference between civilians and the military on his show on June 2, 2012.
