I Love You, You Hate Me is a thought-provoking documentary series on Peacock TV that looks at how and why Barney the Dinosaur, a popular kids’ TV character from the 1980s and 1990s, came to be.
The purple dinosaur was made by Sheryl Leach, and its TV show, “Barney & Friends,” was very popular and brought a lot of fame to those who worked on it. But soon, they were shocked when the children’s character, who was nice and didn’t do anything wrong, was beaten up and even treated with anger and hatred.
This led to death threats, lawsuits, and even an attempt on Cheryl’s life. This had a big effect on Cheryl and her family. Not only that, but the TV show’s cast, especially the child actors who played Barney’s young friends, was affected in both good and bad ways. People want to know where they are now because the Peacock series tells about what they did while working on the show.

Origin and development
Sheryl Leach from Dallas, Texas, came up with the idea for Barney. She thought of making a show for kids after realizing that her son was too old for Wee Sing Together and that there were no videos that would interest him. Leach then put together a team that made Barney and the Backyard Gang, a series of home videos that came out for the first time in 1988. Sandy Duncan was in all three of the first videos.
In 1991, the daughter of Larry Rifkin, who worked for Connecticut Public Television, rented one of the videos and was “mesmerized” by it. Rifkin thought that PBS could build on the idea. Rifkin thought that Barney was interesting because he wasn’t as crazy as Big Bird. He told CPTV president Jerry Franklin about it, and his son, who was in preschool at the time, also loved it. Franklin and Rifkin told all of their coworkers with preschoolers about the idea, and they all agreed that a Barney show would be great for kids. Franklin and Rifkin talked Leach into letting CPTV change the idea for TV. The show first aired in 1992 as Barney & Friends. CPTV and Lyrick Studios worked together to make the show (later bought by HIT Entertainment).
Even though the show was a huge success, PBS decided at first not to pay for more than the first 30 episodes. When Rifkin and other CPTV executives found out about this, they wrote letters to their fellow PBS member stations asking them to ask PBS to change its mind. The Lyons Group, on the other hand, told parents to support Barney & Friends by writing letters and calling their local PBS stations through the Barney Fan Club. By the time the annual meeting of member stations came around, station executives from all over the country were furious that one of their most popular shows might be canceled. PBS finally gave in when the situation became what Rifkin later called “like an insurrection.”
The show was recorded at the Color Dynamics Studios at Greenville Avenue and Bethany Drive in Allen, Texas, for a few years. After that, it moved to The Studios at Las Colinas in Irving, Texas, and then to Carrollton, which is near Dallas. The videos and TV shows are now sold by 9 Story Media Group, HIT Entertainment, and Universal Studios. From 2006 to 2010, WNET made the TV shows.
The show starts with the title card and the theme song, which plays over clips from different episodes, and then it cuts to the school. The kids are seen doing something, which sometimes has something to do with the topic of the episode. When the kids think of something, Barney comes to life from a plush doll and changes into the “real” Barney, which is how he looks in their minds.
Here, the episode’s main plot happens. Barney and the kids learn about the episode’s main topic together. During the episode, Baby Bop, BJ, or Riff may show up, and there are often songs that relate to the episode’s main topic. In later seasons, Baby Bop, BJ, and Riff have bigger roles, and later episodes take place outside of the school in the neighborhood and, in season 13, in other countries around the world.
Barney ends with “I Love You,” and then he goes back to being stuffed and gives the audience a wink. After the kids talk about what they’ve learned, the scene changes to Barney Says (only in seasons 1–8 and 12), where Barney, who is off-screen, tells what he and his friends did that day while still photos from the episode play in the background. Then Barney says goodbye just before the end credits. In seasons 3 through 8 and 12, he later came back on screen, said, “And remember, I love you,” as the first three notes of “I Love You” played, and waved goodbye before the credits rolled.
