The pilot episode of Prime Video’s “The Peripheral” opens with Wilf, played by Gary Carr. He’s lounging in what appears to be London, 2099, on a park bench.
He attempts to warn Flynne Fisher (Chloe Grace Moretz) about a threat to her and her family later in the episode through the machinery at the 3D print business where she works.
The problem is that Flynne is in 2032 and Wilf is phoning from 2099. Somehow, Wilf not only recognises Flynne but also wants to protect her from those who would harm her.
The intricate setting of “The Peripheral,” in which Flynne transports her consciousness into the year 2099 via what she originally thinks is virtual reality technology, includes all of this.
But whatever Flynne does in the future actually happens, and Wilf hasn’t simply become aware of her there; he also thinks she can support him in some more significant way that he hasn’t yet told her about.
While Wilf is one of the few persons in 2099 who Flynne doesn’t entirely trust, he also seems to have her best interests at heart.
Carr, a veteran of programmes including “Downton Abbey,” “The Good Fight,” and “The Deuce,” discussed what drew him to the enigmatic Wilf and how he went about creating the character in an exclusive conversation with Looper.

“I’ve never played a character who was that still,” said the actor.

Wilf is quite still, which caught Carr’s attention first in the book and later in the movie. “I’ve never portrayed a character who was so silent and [had] so much going on without a support system or someone to talk to about it.
What’s happening underneath is not what you can see on the outside. That aspect of the character was incredibly intriguing. That makes characters in a script incredibly appealing to actors, in my opinion.”
Carr explained that Wilf’s character had much of its development already done for him because of how much nuance was included into the script.
“My entire strategy was to recognise… the amazing job that [creator Scott Smith] and [author of the novel “The Peripheral”] William Gibson have done, as well as to honour the vision of [executive producer Jonathan Nolan] and the crew, as well as [executive producer] Lisa Joy and everyone,” Carr said. “My entire [strategy] was to carry out what I observed in the writing.
In terms of developing my persona, I didn’t have to do much because it was all already present.”
